Back Channels: Likely Challenger Sees Chance against Specter

Kevin scores a home run with his interview with Toomey.

My concern is of the Pa GOP setting itself up for failure. Recall in 2006 when the base lashed against Santorum’s support of Specter which in turn lead to Casey defeating Santorum. Are we setting ourselves up for another Dem that adds no value to the state – ala – Casey?

Nunsense @ The Devon Theater

hello
Opening night at the newly restored Devon Theater of the Performing Arts, featuring the inaugural show – Nunsense. The photo above shows a small detail from the stage – a record painted onto the floor commemorating opening night (328-2009), I love little details like this!

The night out to see Nunsense was a birthday gift for mom, I made sure we had front row seats – so the Little Sisters of Hoboken would be sure to quiz her!

I’m no theater critic, I simply love live performance, whether it is music or drama. I can report that the house was packed, the seats were comfy and the show was fabulous. What made it work was the brilliant chemistry between the cast members.

When the unexpected happened, as always in a live show, it was handled with aplomb! Reverend Mother’s prayer chain snapped (Save us Holy Spirit!), the beads went flying in every direction and the cast handled it well by picking up the beads as part of their act!

My seat neighbor had the opportunity to tour backstage and noted that the production technology was first class. He was happy to see the funding raised for this project was spent wisely regarding tech stuff. I am sorry to say that I did not get his name, as he was very popular with the Little Sister’s, I did not want incur the wrath of the Reverend Mother and her clicker.

The show was spectacular, the theater is just the right size, and did I tell you about the comfy seats? I believe this is the start of a great relationship, and I hope my readers take the time to visit this new theater, you’ll love it too!

Cinema Treasures, an online theater guide, has a great post from 2004 which contains a running dialogue up until till March 2009. The ensuing commentary provides a fascinating look from those who worked at the Devon and from those who have a keen interest in theater history of the transformation of the Devon from run down eyesore to a sparkling new theater.

Leave a Light On

Tonight between 8:30 and 9:30 pm tonight, leave a light on and celebrate “Human Achievement Hour“.

Ironically, I will be at a theater at this time where many lights will shine brightly during the show.

My vote is for human achievement and against poor environmental judgment. I’ll leave the porch light on when we leave for the show.

Children of the Corn Law Passes in the House and Senate

Future National Service Volunteers:

Michelle Malkin and Glen Beck dissect this volunteer debacle that comes with a 6 BILLION dollar price tag. That is in addition to the 7.3 Trillion tax payer tab:

The day after the Senate swallowed this debacle of a spending bill. One which our own Senator Spector was only too happy to sign on to, I came across the true value of volunteerism right in my own neighborhood:

Early Saturday morning, while taking Buster for his daily walk, I came across a large group of teens removing trash that littered a small park across from my house. I live and work in Philadelphia, a gritty, blue collar city which is a far cry from William Penn’s delightful description of a “Greene Country Towne”. Philly’s urban jungle makes me more appreciative of the natural oasis that can be seen from my front porch.

Of late, there has been an increasing amount of trash being thrown into the park. Several concerned residents contacted the Fairmount Park Commission to see what could be done to clean out the trash. A volunteer coordinator for Fairmount Park was notified and she organized a clean-up, with the expectation of only a few volunteers showing up to help. She was pleasantly surprised to see a group of at least 30 students arrive to lend their time to clean our small park. The neighborhood was appreciative of their efforts, several people came out to thank the volunteers for their work and one neighbor ordered pizza for the hungry teens.

6 BILLION dollars did not bring about this act of environmental improvement to occur. The volunteer mechanisms are in place in Philly and across the nation, all that is needed is an informed and engaged citizenry. That is what enabled this clean up to happen, not 6 billion dollars. We have allowed our government to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a redundant system that is not adding any value to what is currently in place.

I guarantee my little park would still be a mess if the residents on my street decided to simply sit back and wait for the 6 Billion to trickle down to our little oasis.

Happy volunteers, with no uniform or oath to memorize, as is required in this new Children of the Corn bill:

My oasis in a blanket of snow this past January:

Justify Full
